This piece is a vivid and abstract representation of human emotions. It reflects a time when I was severely depressed and overwhelmed, unsure of what to do or who to turn to. I used diverse materials and techniques to convey both the rawness and depth of these feelings.
The front hands are made of clay to represent the main emotions of the woman in the painting, capturing heaviness and emotional weight. The clay symbolizes the self-destructive tendencies that depression can cause, including self-harm. The back hands are not made of clay because they represent anxiety, the constant background of depression, showing unease and persistent overthinking.
A single yellow finger represents the small amount of happiness that remains, reminding her that hope is still possible if she continues to fight. I chose to use real hair to add texture and experiment with mixed media. The colors emphasize the tension and interplay of emotions, capturing the internal chaos that often accompanies depression and anxiety along with moments of intensity, darkness, and hope.
